<지금 어디에 살고 있나요?>는 서울시-문체부 공공미술 프로젝트 『서울, 25부작;』선정작품이다. 본 작품은 2021년 현재 부동산 폭등으로 주거가 불안정해진 현실에서 시민들에게 삶과 거주의 의미를 묻는 시민참여형 미디어아트 작품이다.
대면·비대면으로 진행된 질적 인터뷰 51개와 시민들이 직접 쓴 104편의 설문 원고로 이루어진 25만여자의 텍스트는 터널에 설치된 LED 전광판에 나타난다. 공간과 장소의 이동을 통해 개인의 삶을 구술하는“공간생애사”라는 개념으로 시민들의 이야기를 모을 수 있었다. “집은 어떤 의미인가요?” “주거의 이동이 가지는 의미는 무엇인가요?”등 삶과 거주의 의미를 묻는 질문과 이에 대한 답변이 그 내용이 된다. 터널을 지나는 주민과 관객은 어느 순간 자연스럽게 시민들의 이야기를 읽게 될 것이며 각각의 질문에 대한 자신만의 답변을 완성하게 되는 것까지가 본 작품의 완성이라 할 수 있다.
부동산 경제라는 거시사를 배경으로 개인의 역사라는 미시사의 교차점을 짚은 본 작품은 거시적 역사의 제약을 수용하고 극복해내는 개인의 삶을 나타내는 작업이 된다. 은하수를 모티프 삼은 미디어아트 패널은 시민들의 이야기와 기억들이 별의 군집처럼 터널을 밝힌다. 공간을 밝히는 추억과 기억을 통해 관객은 과거와 현재를 마주할 수 있게 되며 어두운 터널을 지날 때조차도 지금의 순간을 영위한다는 감각, 즉 현재를 살아가고 있다는 감각을 일깨울 수 있다.
작품의 일환으로 인터뷰를 수록한 본 저서 <지금 어디에 살고 있나요?>와 시민들의 목소리로 완성된 사운드아트가 제작되었다.

“Anywhere but Here” is the artwork chosen for the Seoul Metropolitan Government and MCST Public Art Project “25 Episodes of Seoul;”. This artistic work is a participation media art piece in which citizens are asked about their living situation and everyday lives amidst unstable housing conditions due to the soaring real estate bubble of 2021.

51 in-person and non-in-person interviews along with 104 surveys completed by local citizens, consisting of over 250,000 words, are showcased on LED electronic boards hung in tunnel installations. Utilizing the concept of “Life Stories of a Space”, they collected the stories of citizens, looking at individual lives through the movement of space and location. When interviewing people about the meaning of their everyday lives and living conditions, they included questions like “What does home mean?” and “What kind of meaning is there in the act of moving your home?” The artistic piece is really completed through the act of local residents and visitors passing through the tunnels, reading the flowing text, and thinking in that instance about their own answers to these questions.

With the “macro history” of the current real estate economy as a background, this artistic piece showcases the “micro history” of individual lives and how each in their own way go about overcoming this macro-economic background. The media art panel, with the Milky Way as its motif, illuminates the tunnel with the stories and memories of citizens becoming clusters of stars. Through the flow of memories and experiences evoking images of space, the audience faces the past and present as they pass through the dark tunnel and in doing so get a sense of living in the now, in that moment.

As part of this artistic work the “Project Archive Book” was created containing sound art composed of the citizen’s voices in the recorded interviews.
